Aquatic pH Stability

Managing ecosystems in water

Aquariums

Most aquatic life depends on a stable pH environment. Rapid swings can "shock" a fish's system, leading to stress or death.

Target Ranges

  • Freshwater Tropical: 6.5 – 7.5
  • Marine (Saltwater): 8.0 – 8.4
  • African Cichlids: 7.8 – 8.6

Always check the specific needs of your species. "Stability is more important than a perfect number."

Swimming Pools

Proper pH is crucial for chlorine effectiveness. If pH is too high, the chlorine won't kill bacteria; if too low, it can sting the eyes and corrode equipment.

Target Range

7.2 – 7.6

Maintaining your "Total Alkalinity" (TA) helps lock this pH range in place through buffering.

Notice: Professional Care

This application does not provide dosing instructions. Chemical adjustments to large bodies of water should be done based on the directions on the product packaging or after consulting a professional servicer. Always test, adjust slowly, and wait before re-testing.

Common Mistakes

Over-correcting

Adding too many chemicals at once can cause a "yo-yo" effect. Go slow.

Ignoring TA

If your pH won't stay put, your bicarbonate buffering (Alkalinity) may be too low.

Dirty Samples

Sunlight, sweat, or lotion on your hands can contaminate test results.
