pH Indicators: Strips, Colors & Limits

pH strips and color indicators are popular because they’re fast and simple. But they’re also easy to misread. This guide explains what indicators do, why two people sometimes see different “colors,” and how to reduce errors.

What a pH indicator does

A pH indicator is a dye that changes color depending on acidity. With strips/kits, you compare the result to a chart. The output is usually a range rather than a perfectly precise value.

Why strips can be inconsistent

  • Lighting: indoor lights can change perceived color. Daylight is best.
  • Timing: reading too early/late changes the shade.
  • Wetness: too much liquid can bleed colors across pads.
  • Subjectivity: two people can interpret borderline colors differently.

How to improve consistency (safe tips)

  1. Use the same lighting conditions (preferably natural daylight).
  2. Use the same timing each test (follow the kit instructions).
  3. Use a clean container and avoid contamination.
  4. If results are important, repeat and compare the trend.

When meters are better (conceptually)

Meters can be more precise, but they need calibration and probe care. If your goal is learning trends and general ranges, strips may be enough. If you need tighter consistency, meter technique matters.

FAQ

Why do strips show a “range” not a number?
Because they’re designed for approximate estimation. Color charts often represent bands.

Can I compare strip results between brands?
Be careful: charts and dyes differ. Compare within the same brand/kind where possible.

Why do my readings drift?
See “What affects pH?” for temperature, CO₂ exchange, buffering, and sampling effects.
